L 586
Situation
The tradition of quarrying at the site now operated by RPBL
goes back as far as 1888 and, since the very beginnings
right up to the present day, volcanic raw materials have been
excavated and processed here. All that time, up to this very
day, volcanic raw materials have been dug out and processed
here. The eleven basalt and lava quarries in the Eifel region and
the area of the Middle Rhine are sources of high quality natural
stone, with basalt and lava rocks being used, among other
things, as construction blocks for installations involving water,
as railway track ballast, in the construction of sports grounds,
and as aggregates in concrete and asphalt.
RPBL has been able to maintain a highly successful operation
in a competitive market through continuous modernisation
of the production facilities. The company also runs on-going
training programmes for personnel and invests in the most
economical and efcient excavation and materials handling
plant and equipment. Top priority is given in this situation to
the company‘s guiding motto: “Treat the environment well,
maximum quality of products, and satisfied customers”.
Task
The RPBL facility at Mayen, which went into operation in 1956,
is a centre for basalt production. The basalt is used, among
other things, for the manufacture of construction blocks for
installations involving water, with a weight of 10-60 kg, and as
aggregates with a size from 0-32 mm.
Here, since January 2011, RPBL have been using the world‘s
largest hydrostatically driven wheel loader, the L 586 from
Liebherr and, in that short time, this powerful machine has
already achieved 250 operating hours. Among its other tasks,
the wheel loader is involved with stockpile management, the
sorting of construction blocks for water installations from the
production plant, filling the hoppers for the crusher feed
system, and the loading of customers‘ trucks. This allows
RPBL to achieve its annual target of 150,000 tonnes of quality
end-products for its large customer base.
